Simone Gallagher, Settings & software editor

I'm the editor for everything that happens between the artwork and the finished piece: software, focus, settings and upkeep. It's the unglamorous half of laser engraving, and it's where most of the frustration in owner reviews comes from.

My reading list is software documentation, the focus and alignment sections of each manual, and the fine print on which controller a program supports. Software that runs a machine only through a paid tier is a classic. So is an autofocus routine the manual quietly limits to one bed or one lens. I check those details against the exact listing and the manufacturer's own pages.

When owners write that a job came out fine once and never again, the cause is usually the origin, the focus height or a setting nobody wrote down. That's why every guide I write pushes a settings grid on scrap and a saved job record. Mine are the ones on software workflow, focus and alignment, repeatable settings and maintenance.

I don't have these machines on my bench. What I do is read the manuals closely, compare the models side by side and fix the guides when a model or a software version changes.

Areas of expertise

  • Software workflow: artwork, units, origin and preview
  • Settings grids and material records
  • Focus and alignment
  • Software and controller compatibility
  • Maintenance by the manual

How I work

  • I check software and controller compatibility against the exact machine and its generation.
  • I read the focus and maintenance sections of each manual before I write a single step.
  • I'd rather point you to a settings grid on scrap, and say what to write down, than promise a result on your material.
  • When a software version or a model changes, I go back and update the guide.

How we compare and rate machines, accessories and materials is explained on How we rate. The rest of the team: Our editors.
